A Research fellowship MSc (Reference ICETA 2019-105) is now open for applications at ICETA, in the context of the Project “Climate change and genomics of adaptation to extreme desert conditions”, with reference PTDC/BIA-ECO/28158/2017 supported by national funds by FCT/MCTES.
Main research field:Molecular laborathory/genetic analyses
Sub research field:Population genetics
Scientific areas:Evolutionary Biology
Admission requirements:Candidates will be admitted to the call when: (i) holding a MSc degree in the Natural Sciences, Mathematics, Engineering, or Computer Sciences; (ii) demonstrating previous experience with laborathory and genetics work and tools in a scientific and/or professional context; and (iii) demonstrating proficiency in written English.
Project overview and workplan:The project investigates the effect of past climatic changes on the genomic architecture of adaptation using Sahara desert specialist, jerboa Jaculus jaculus. Since the formation of the Sahara, during the Mid-Upper Pliocene, the region went through several climate changes. Those changes influenced habitat structure of recently described cryptic species within jerboa. Discovery of divergence in fur coloration and camouflage lead to the hypothesis that jerboa species specialized to explore divergent habitats. In this project we ask: what is the role of climate changes in shaping the genomic architecture of adaptations to extreme desert conditions, camouflage and habitat specialization?
Keywords: Adaptation; Genomics; Ecology; Deserts; Bioinformatics.
Legislation framework:A fellowship contract will be celebrated according to the regulations defined by FCT “Regulations for Advanced Training and Qualification of Human Resources”, in accordance with Law 40/2004, of 18 August, as amended and republished by Decree-Law No. 202/2012 of 27 August, and as amended by Decree-Law No. 233/2012 of 29 October and by Law No. 12/2013, of 29 January, and Decree-Law No. 89/2013 of 9 July, to Fellowships Regulation of FCT (www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/docs/RegulamentoBolsasFCT2018.pdf), and to Fellowships Regulation of ICETA approved by FCT.
Work place:The work will be conducted at CIBIO-InBIO, UP – Centro de Investigação em Biodiversidade e Recursos Genéticos, Universidade do Porto, Campus de Vairão, Rua Padre Armando Quintas, 7, 4485-661 Vairão, under the scientific supervision of Dr Zbyszek Boratynski.
Fellowship:The fellowship will have a duration of 12 months and is due to start in February 2020.
Salary:Monthly stipend is €989.70 according to the stipends established by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores). Payment will be made by bank transfer on a monthly basis. The successful candidate will also be entitled to the reimbursement of Social Security payments (Seguro Social Voluntário) and will benefit from a work insurance.
Selection criteria:The jury panel will select the best candidate based on his/her merit, through the analysis of:
Overall appreciation of the Curriculum Vitae (80%), namely: (a) adequacy of the academic background to the specific topic of the call (25%); (b) demonstrated knowledge and skills in data management (25%); (c) demonstrated experience with genetics, genomics, bioinformatics or mathematical and statistical modelling, tools and related software/programming languages (20%); and (d) demonstrated experience of international communication of scientific results, especially in the form of manuscripts (10%).
Motivation letter (20%);
If considered justifiable by the jury, the best candidates (up to 5) from a provisional ranking based on the criteria described above (70%) will be invited for an interview (30%), in person or by videoconference, to establish the final ranking. If the candidates do not fulfil the required quality standards the jury might decide not to award the fellowship.
